The Story

  • Hawkman fights a T-Rex and wins. Then he says this really fucked up thing, about the land at the bottom of the mountain belonging to him??? So colonizing and annoying. Just because you won against a T-Rex, doesn’t mean it’s your land? Eyeroll.
  • Hawkman fights humanoid birds just like him, but they’re “feral” and he’s civilized.
  • He reaches the top of the mountain and runs into a magical, elder bird-man who tells him he’s been charged with guarding a secret for centuries that only Hawkman can access.

The Review

  • Some of the logic and ignorance of this book is so wild to me. If Hawkman has reincarnated countless times through ages, why does he have to be a white man right now? I mean, I know why, but ugh. DC is so stale.
  • What draws me to Hawkman is how much he fucks up continuity and how key he seems to be to some big DCU mysteries.  I think I’ll always be interested because of that.
  • This issue is mostly fighting, first the T-Rex, then the other birds that look like him. Not a ton of substance.
  • The art is fantastic. I love the way Hitch draws the natural world and the scientific, futuristic stuff.
  • The pacing is a little too much for me. I hope every issue doesn’t end with Hawkman being ripped to another era—it feels too jarring.
  • This series already feels like a wait-for-trade release. There’s too little that happens in each issue to experience this as a monthly comic.
  • Instead of suspenseful, the story seems interrupted at the end of the issue.
